We very much loved the Spring Caravan and Camping Show in March - we love looking round the fabulous new motorhomes, meeting all our clients and planning endless trips, but one of the best things is getting a look at all the accessories being showcased at the exhibition. Some designed with total genius, to make our lives all that little bit more comfortable in the limited space of the caravan like the modern solar power battery chargers we have recently reviewed; and some designed with a bit more of a quirky feel, from cow print sleeping bags to camping inspired onesies. Keep an eye on our blog pages for more details and reviews of gadgets and accessories.
Holiday Parks / Campsites
The UK is the most fantastic country for caravan holidays, despite the naysayers. The weather can be tricky, but we are lucky to have beautiful diverse countryside, fine cuisine, amazing beaches and caravan sites to suit every budget and holiday requirement somewhere within these shores.
You cannot beat the south coast for beautiful beaches. Dorset has some fine stretches of golden sandy beach, including Studland Beach near Poole Harbour which is renowned for its 30 mile stretch of beautiful beach coupled with heathlands and boating opportunities. If you prefer, Weston-super-Mare combines a large beach along with some traditional British seaside attractions including its newly rebuilt grand pier.
Devon is also famous for particularly lovely beaches, including Saunton Sands with extensive dune system for seaside exploring, Croyde Bay for those who enjoy surfing and other Watersports. Should a Cornish Cream Tea tickle your fancy, head down to Crantock in Cornwall, with its picturesque village and English country pubs, or perhaps take the time to explore Porthmeor Beach in St Ives.
Inland, there are some equally beautiful sites throughout the UK, including the Cotswolds and some lovely areas in Wales.
Looking for the right caravan park can take some filtering. Are you looking for a touring park, a regular static park, or something a bit upmarket? If you are planning on camping, will you be taking all your own equipment or perhaps looking at glamping in a pod or yurt? It is hard to go wrong in Britain with a bit of research, but choose an area that you know will provide interest come rain or shine. This might mean a park with lots of indoor facilities, pool, kids club or spa; or it might mean choosing funky cosmopolitan Brighton for couples or Weymouth for families.
Check what you will need to bring any extra costs for entertainment, as well as local attractions, beaches, restaurants and more, and then no matter what the weather you will be fully prepared for a fun packed holiday!
Choosing Camping Equipment Supplies
Once you have made the decision to go on a camping holiday, you need to ensure that you get the right camping equipment for the type of camping holiday you are undertaking.
Depending on whether you are going to an organised camp site - where tents and some, if not most, of your camping equipment will be provided; or a 'back to basics' campsite where you will need to take all of your own equipment. In this case have a checklist for your camping equipment, so that you don't leave anything behind, and spend time in the planning to make the actual experience more enjoyable and relaxed.
The biggest item on the camping equipment list is the tent and if you need to supply your own, you need to decide whether to buy or rent this from your chosen campsite or an equipment supplier. If it is going to be used regularly, then it is more sensible to buy your own, but there are several companies around as well as campsites and parks who will rent out single items or your complete camping equipment list.
There are several factors to be taken in to consideration when choosing a tent: size, cost, transportability and type of camping being done. Once you have decided on your tent, the other basic items on your camping equipment list include sleeping bags, sleeping mats or camp beds, tables, chairs, cooking equipment, cooking utensils. Depending on the facilities provided by your campsite or park, additional items on your camping equipment list can include lighting, torches, radio, first aid kit and basic tool kit. You also need to remember your personal items such as clothing and toiletries.
When packing for your camping holiday, checking items off on your checklist will ensure that your time away is more enjoyable, and should any emergencies arise you will be equipped to cope with them.
Caravan & Motorhome Dealers, Parts & Repairs
Taking your camping interest one step further and buying a new or used caravan or motorhome can involve a considerable financial investment, so the right decision has to be made. Visiting motorhome shows and dealers will give you an insight in to what is available and the cost involved, and help you decide the model or type that best suits your needs. Talking to dealers will of course help you choose where you want to buy from, because the reputation of a particular dealer can be a useful tool in helping you decide who to use. Talk to other owners for their opinions too. Having decided on what you are looking for, you then need to decide whether to buy new or used. The advantages of buying a new van or motorhome may seem to compensate for the extra cost, especially with a motorhome with more mechanics to maintain, as you will be getting a warranty and spare parts will be available new from the manufacturer, but your budget may dictate that used is the only option. If this is the case, talk to your dealer to make sure the model you purchase is not too complicated to repair, and that spares & parts are easily available to buy. As with any considerable financial outlay, time should be taken to visit the many caravan and motorhome dealers around, and obtain as much information about the prices and availability of models that meet your requirements, the availability and condition of spare parts, after sales service and warranties provided. Some motorhome and dealers will also provide assistance with financing and insuring your purchase. They will also be able to provide a range of accessories for your van or motorhome to enable you to get the most out of your purchase.
Once you have purchased your chosen van or motorhome, you then need to make sure you keep it in tip top condition to get the maximum enjoyment out of your investment. Parts and repairs for most modern models are readily available, although some parts can be expensive. A reputable dealer will also be able to help you to source parts for maintaining your van or motorhome, and they will also be able to recommend reliable companies to help you to buy parts and make repairs.
