Whether you are looking for a brand new, top of the range caravan, or on a slightly tighter budget perhaps for your first caravan, then a proper dealer is always going to be your best starting point. Like with cars, a private seller may well be able to give you a good deal, but the back up of knowledge and a possible warranty will be missing, and unless you are an expert looking for a fixer upper, this may not be the right option.
For a first time caravanner, it does make sense to look at a good quality used option. A new van can be an expensive option, and unless you are certain that the lifestyle is for you, depreciation on a new model might leave you with a very costly failed experiment. This said, spend the most you can, on a good, up to date example to make sure you get the best from your introduction to touring or caravanning and hopefully avoid the pitfalls of an older model which may require mire work or harder to source parts.
Its also good to check out a few dealers to give you an idea of what is available in your price range usually they will have a reasonable selection available to view to give you an idea of how things can be priced, and of course you can have a look online at other dealers further afield to see how their prices compare.
