Of course, you could use any portable light or lantern in your tent or awning, but it makes sense to invest in some proper camping lighting which is designed for use in a tent specifically. LED lighting has vastly improved in recent years, and is now bright enough to use as a decent, white light source, and has the benefit of using incredibly minimal power. A good one should be supplied with a carabiner so that you can hang it easily in any location you need in your tent.
Traditionalist campers may prefer to use a lantern, perhaps gas powered. These are usually run off of small LPG cylinders, and, if following the manufacturers directions, are safe, although not recommended for use inside your tent.
